I don't know Tennessee law, but it is possible that by holding the checks then cashing them and them not being honored, he was able to collect more than face value by adding interest and bad check charges. Any court cost would be reimbursed by the defendant unless the defendant won the case. The statutes for Tennessee would list the maximum fees and interest rates allowed. It would also list the SOL for them before they were time barred and uncollectable. You may be in the clear. Make sure you have bank statements for that account from the time period that you wrote those checks. Writing an insuffecient funds check isn't as serious as writing a check on a closed account, so you will want to have proof that you wrote them in good faith.
