You need to send a filed copy of the answer to the lawyer via Certified Mail, Return Receipt requested, and usually you must also file a "certificate of service" along with the answer stating that you filed the paper with the court and mailed a copy to the opposing attorney.

The easiest way to do this is to take three copies of the answer and the certificate of service with you to the courthouse and have the other two copies stamped by the clerk when you file both documents. The court clerks may have a certificate of service form that you can use, but you may have to type one up yourself.

I don't know about FL, but most courts allow you several days (my court allows 10) from the date you file your appearance to file an answer. You still have to properly serve a copy of the appearance form on the attorney, though. For an extra fee (if you ask), many court clerks will serve the papers for you. At this late date, that may be your best bet if they offer such a service.
