Paying off Charge-Off

I have a few charge-offs (about 4 years old) on my credit report. These accounts were sold and are also showing up on my credit report.

I have read that I might be able to get these items removed but that I need to get this in writing. I have also read that I should always pay off the original account holder and not the company that purchased the charge-off.

My questions are do I approach the original creditor, with the offer to pay, if the item is removed from the credit report? What if they reply that the account was sold and that I am to deal with the new company that purchased it? By paying the new company I will be going against the advice to always pay the original creditor.

Any advice, tips, or answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
