Couple of questions- long

Hi. I just stumbled upon this site and have a couple of questions I'm hoping someone can help me with. My father just refinanced his home and we decided to go ahead and add my name to the refinancing... little did I realize that all of my seemingly old credit card debt would pop up on the credit reports. I knew they were there but to be honest (this is sad) I stopped thinking about them a few years ago. The mortgage company stated that we would have to pay those amounts showing on the credit reports (dad is clean cept for 2 weird things- next question down) but mine was staggering. They have cut checks and mailed them to me, but the rep did state I could try and cut a settlement deal and they would have to return the difference. The checks are cut for the amount showing on the credit reports. As my nick states I live in Maryland... most of these I stopped paying on in 2000 or 2001, a few as early as 1999. If I do mail the checks out, does that mean it all restarts on the credit reports for another 7 years?? I'm confused by that. I'm just not sure what to do, the stupidity of my youth is coming back to haunt me. I wouldn't have bothered but after going thru the appraisal of the house and being the only child it just seemed safer to have my name tied to the house.

2nd question... Also in doing the refinancing, 2 liens pop up on my dad's credit report. They didn't pop up with the original home equity loan that we refinanced into a mortgage. One is from Maryland state tax from 1985 and the other from 1981. One is a joint lien with my deceased mother and one was just in my mom's name. How can a lien be there but they don't send out notices or anything? Is this common does anyone know and is there anything that can be done at this point? After my mom's death, my dad and I discovered that she had not paid several years worth of taxes (she handled all the bills, etc) and as soon as we realized I paid 8000.00 worth of stuff to the State of Maryland, and was told that everything was paid. This was in 1998 by the way. I just am befuddled that these liens have been there but we haven't gotten any written bills or anything in the past 6 years at least since mom has been gone and they are 20 years old basically.. would they just sit there forever? Sorry about the length of this but I'm just trying to sort thru stuff. :(

Thanks
