I am also a member of the Late in Life Student Loan Payers' Assoc., but I have you all beat. I'm 68. I want to stop working, but that monthly $243 payment keeps me on the job. I have been told by Sallie Mae and by the Dept of Ed that the only way to get forgiveness is to teach in an inner city school for 5 years. Yeah, right!
I can get a forebearance on my 9% loan (not eligible for consolidation), but after my $50 a month payments expire, the monthlies will be higher than I am now paying. I have contacted my Senator's office to see if I can get a private bill passed to eradicate this debt.
Today I spoke with someone from New Leaf Associates who says they can terminate my loan for under $4000.00.
No bad marks on my credit - which happens to be good.
I went to New Leaf's web site and it sounds too good to be true. Does anyone have any info about them?
Thanx.
