SOL or Validation Letter: Which is more appropriate here?

I had posted previously regarding this, but I have a follow-up question. I have a CA (Merchants Credit Guide) attempting to collect on behalf of Asset Acceptance who has apparently purchased a delinquent Target account that's past SOL in my state of SC. (Original default predated April, 2000). My prior question was whether to send an SOL letter to the CA, and I was advised to do so.

In the meantime, I've been writing to the 3 CRAs regarding 1 or 2 things on my CR that legitimately aren't mine, and it occured to me that with this Merchants/Asset/Target thing, I might be better off to request validation from either the CA or the CRA before I send an SOL letter to the CA, because the original defaulted balance on the card in question was maybe $240, but this agency is trying to collect something like $678. Any thoughts?
