WHYCHAT/Lady in Red - Two questions

Hey y'all! Haven't been around lately, sorry...my dad was diagnosed with cancer and I have started a new job, been a whirlwind last few months.

First, a quick update...I won my fight against the DSL company with a few choicely worded letters. They haven't touched my credit report since.

Hence my questions:

All I have left are one or two unpaid collections, about two to three years old, from SBC (phone company) for old bills. One was assigned to 2 different CAs and shows twice for the same bill because of that.

Any advice for negotiating these away (not showing at ALL on my CR)? I live in California if that is relevant. Got my score up to 577 now and hoping to buy a home perhaps next year once my car loan is paid off.

Secondly, I have a friend whose dentist apparently just screwed him over. Scenario: about a year ago, he had a bridge put in. At the time the dentist told him his insurance would cover it or at least most of it. First, the bridge did not fit at ALL and he was in complete agony wearing it. So he went into the office and dropped it off, saying I can't use this; it doesn't fit. Dentist never called or anything; friend got a notice from insurance that the dentists had "fired" his family as patients. Concurrently, friend got ONE notice that insurance would pay NOTHING and billing him $700+ for the bridge. Unfortunately, he never paid or called etc. Today, they received a collection notice. No notices of any kind in the interim from either dentist or any CA.

Any ideas about recourse on this?

Thanks a million! Have missed you guys!

-ET
