Well, you can't believe anything they say. What does your credit report say, when was the first 30 days late. I would say that this account is passed the SOL, and you don't owe them anything.
The SOL does not change regardless of who is collecting on the account or how many times it is sold. Maryland has a 3 years SOL on open accounts, that's it.
