What is a "court of record"
Are they trying to get a default judgement without proper service?

This is from a CA attorney website?
We file our suits in courts of record to take advantage of the ability to obtain judgments without court appearances. We rarely require witnesses for trial as we are usually able to obtain consent agreements, settlements and judgments without having to go to court.
