Disputing Validity and C&D Question

I'm not clear on a couple of things and hope you can help me. 1. I have been talking with CA's, a Law Firm, and department stores directly for about a year now regarding payment on my debt. Even now, I can still request via a letter that they prove (validate) this debt to me? 2. That brings me to my second question...which letter to use. I have seen one to cease communications only and I've seen one that requests that as well as to validate the debt. It seems the 2nd one would be better, but depends on the answer to question #1.
