I used a debt counseling service called United Debt Counseling. I was being hounded by three CA and figured that these guys could help. They charged a $299 setup fee and then a $50 monthly fee. However, I only had to send them $265 a month (this included their fee) and since I was paying the 3 CAs over $400 a month, I thought it sounded good. UDC also assured me that no more contact to me by the CA would be allowed and they would handle everything. Seven months have gone by and one of the CA is threatening to sue me for refusal to pay. Everytime I tell them to contact UDC they say they have never heard of them. I called UDC and told them I want to quit working with them and want my money back. They said it needed to be in writing. I wrote them and in the meantime UDC calls and says they can settle for 77% of the debt. BUT considering that late fees and interest have been adding up for seven months, they are really saying they can settle for the original debt. Plus I would send UDC $265 a month for the next 2 years. I told them forget it and send me my money. Today, I get a call saying they are still trying to settle the debt. I reminded them of our conversation and since I sent the termination letter CRRR, I know they got it. The lady on the phone said "well I didn't know about this". They have agreed to send the money but there is a $300 termination fee. So, they get $949 of my money and I get $990 back. They did nothing for me except screw things up more. RUN from these places that say they can settle your debt for you. 99% of them are scams.
