Overwhelming Hospital debt.

Friend of mine has incurred tremendous hospital charges. He is allready in a near state of financial collapse. It will take him the rest of his life and then some to come close to paying this off. He was un insurable. He is not on welfare, has children and also pays support for another child. His illness almost cost him his job. Is there any limitations or must he face this burden of medical charges the rest of his life?
