Collection Agency Hounding Me

I have a collection agency (PDI) contacting me about a debt from a Chase Manhattan credit card 1989. The original amount deliquent was approx $1000. I have no record that I paid this 12 years ago. This agency is trying to bully me into paying $5600 in late fees and interest. Isn't there some kind of statute of limitations on this. I don't want my credit record to be blemished by this. And, I can't afford an attorney for this. Would someone guide me on this?
