Your friend should find a good bankruptcy lawyer (one who just handles bankruptcies, or primarily handles bk's) and file ch 7. That's what that law is for. As soon as the bk is discharged, he can begin to rebuild his credit history. In a few years it will all be in the past.

If he is up to dealing with creditors, there are other ways to handle it, but for someone who is overwhelmed, and not strong, bk is the way out.
