Credit report

I have quite a few negative items on my credit report from the years of 1993 and 1994. The problem is, it has been 7 years and some of these items are still showing up when they should have been removed. Is there some kind of way the credit bureau can update a persons credit report. I have been uncapable of paying these bills over the years, so the debts were never satisfied. How long should your bad credit hang over your head? I really need some type of answer!!!!
