Wow, Linda, you're prompt and thorough - thanks!! I was already thinking about sending them a registered letter telling them that all correspondence needs to go to my California address. That way they'd be forced to serve me the papers in California even if they attempted a lawsuit in Virginia. I'm pretty sure they're entitled to file in Virginia because that's where they were located and that's where my residence was at the time of the charges. I may also send a cease-and-desist letter to the collection agent telling them I want to deal directly with Capital One. Then I'll tell Capital One that I need details of the disputed debt (i.e. receipts from the original 1989 charges). With any luck, they'll never bother to pull them or won't be able to find them. Either way, I should be covered. Thanks again for the advice.
