Filing a lawsuit would be silly if they are attempting to ignore the letter of validation. That's the first thing they'll have to produce in court is your signature on a contract. The point in sending the request for validation letter on an old account is number 1, it's your right to do so under the law. And 2, make them prove they are trying to collect without solid records. If the account has been past on very many times, then it's a great bet that they can't produce your signiture on anything.
