Pay the cable company, but have them give you a letter stating that the debt is paid in full (for future refernce - these things can keep cropping up).
If they will, get them to call the collection agency and tell them to take their entries off your credit reports, that you have taken care of it.

If they won't, then send a copy of that letter to the collection agency yourself, with a demand that they cease communications with you and remove all their entries from your credit report immediately.
