Do you have grounds for appealing it? Why didn't you go to court and defend yourself? If you have good reasons, then yes, by all means, consult a lawyer with experience in this area.

If you were not properly served, or if there is something wrong with the judgment, you could have grounds for having the judgment vacated.

Otherwise, you're looking at 8 more years of threats and possible garnishment - NJ SOL on judgments is 14 yrs.
