want to close credit card account

I've had a credit card from MBNA for almost a year now and the rate was 13.99...not bad for a college student. Recently I was over my limit but was still making regular payments and eventually I was sent an amendment to my credit card agreement saying the interest rate will now be 22.98 saying something to the effect that this is due to information from equifax. I'm wondering what will happen if I choose to close this account and keep making regular payments until the account is fully paid. Will this affect my credit report??
