CC companies tried to deny Settlement. How Common is this?

I settled with several credit card companies 8 months ago. It took them all a few months to reflect this which was no surpise.

Two of them, however, tried to pretend that the settlement didn't happen. We of course had all the documentary proof and managed to force them to admit it FINALLY. I had to threaten to sue one of 'em (We have a *LOT* of evidence) before they said "Oh, THAT settlement."

I just got the letter today saying "Thanks for your settlement" at the same time I got a statement showing that we owed a bunch of money! I'm talking about BankOne/First USA by the way.

So, is this just incredible incompetence, or do they do this to squeeze more money out of you? Bankone was claiming that they had NO record of the settlement...until I provided them with all of it.

Does this happen a lot?
