Close the checking account that has your name on it and let your friend open a new one at a different bank. What state are you in? Are you saying that these were your mother's accounts and you are an authorized user? If that is the case, then you are not responsible for these accounts.

As far as a law suit.....chances are very good that you will not get sued at all. The percentage of law suits is actaully quite low when compared to the number of accounts that go into default. Of course, there are no guarantees.

Relax, change your phone number. There is a lot of psychology in debt collection. Sounds like you are pretty stressed out. Collection agents lie and threaten, but most of what they say is bull. If I had a lot of time, and a lot of space here, I could tell you exactly what they will say to you......THEY SAY IT TO EVERYBODY. It is a script, they are just reading it. It doesn't mean doodly. Post your state so we can see what kind of exemptions you have.
