question about being sued

Since they threaten lawsuit all the time, is there any warning that they are actually filing suit or does the sheriff just show up with the paperwork? I'm trying to hold off filing BK, but want to be watching for signs of lawsuit to avoid the extra wrinkle. None of my bills is over $5K by itself so can't image it's worth the effort, but afraid not to be concerned.
