Under federal law, you have the right to demand that a collection agency prove you owe the debt. The agency must provide you with a copy of the original document that created the debt, such as the credit card agreement it claims you signed.

In addition, the agency must prove it has the right to collect the debt, usually by providing proof the original creditor has assigned it this particular account for collection.

Finally, the agency must provide an accounting of how it arrived at the total amount it is requesting from you, including any interest and fees added to the original debt.

Once you have requested this proof in writing, the agency is not allowed to continue collection actions until it provides the requested documents. Most will anyway and they are then in violation of federal laws. You need to keep track of all of this so you can SUE THEM if you find an opportunity to do so.

If a collector is too stupid to buy a debt they cannot prove you owe then let them go to hell. DO NOT EVER give in to the threats and tactics of collectors.

Always know your rights, use them like weapons to fight these low life collection scum. They chose to buy your debt for pennies on the dollar. Let them go bankrupt trying to collect what shouldn't be theirs to collect in the first place.
