SETTLEMENT LETTER

i HAVE RECENTLY GOTTEN A LETTER From AN ATTORNEY STATING THAT ONE OF MY CREDIT CARD DEBTS HAS BEEN TURNED OVER TO THEM. ASIDE FROM THE BLANKET LETTER THEY HAVE SENT ME WHICH ONLY INDICATED THE NAME OF THE ORIGINAL DEBTOR AND THE AMOUNT OWED, WHAT ELSE AM I entitled to as far as proof. This debt from the lawyer is not on my credit report although they claim they have bought it 8 months ago and are now just tracking me down. They also said that three payments I had sent a year ago was forwarded on to them from the original creditor. I don't know what to do since this is not on my credit report and all I have is a generic "you owe" letter. If I wanted to negotiate a settlement for the promise of them not reporting it , how should I word it? What else should I have them prove? I need to buy some time to save up money so I don't want to say too much or the wrong thing to screw my chances of a negotiation or something.
