A validation letter will buy you some time. Keep in mind that these attoneys who buy charged-off debts are subject to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act just like collection agencies. Make them produve proff that it really is you (since they say they were trying to find you). Ask for something with your signature on it.

What state are you in, and when did you make the last payment on that account?
