Collection Agency Threatening Lawsuit! Help!

I have an unpaid debt to American Express of $3000.00. They sold it to a collection agency. This collection agency called a year ago and said I could pay all or they would sue. They would not accept monthly payments. Another collection agency called yesterday saying AMEX was going to sue me if I didn't pay them 1985.00. AMEX said they weren't, but the collection agency may choose to. The last activity on the account was 1997 and I'm in North Carolina. Has the statute of limitations run out? Is a credit card an open account in North Carolina? HELP!!!!
