Effect of Bankruptsy

I bought a vehicle from a person on a Saturday. We drafted a Bill of Sale and both of us signed it. I have the original. We were told that the car was paid for. Two days later, they reneged on the deal saying that they were about to file bankruptsy. I stated that this had nothing to do with the sale of the car. My lawyer states that I have a legally binding contract. They say their lawyer says it does'nt matterif we have a signed contract. Does the filing of bankruptsy have any connection with the sale of this vehicle?
