Trying to Settle

I had an account with American Express that went delinquent in 1997. I had been making payments to one collection company and after 1 year, asked for an accounting before I would continue. They never responded but the account got sent to (sold?) a local law firm. I made some payments to them and then asked for an accounting. During the time it took them to respond, they filed a lawsuit against me although I still have not actually been served and have no papers. (I got another letter from a law firm saying I could file bk with them.) In the meantime, I sent them a check for the entire principal owed along with approximately 50% of the interest charges that they claimed had accumulated. They returned the check to me over three weeks later saying they would not accept in as a settlement but never mentioning the lawsuit. However, during that time, since I didn't hear anything, I thought the check was lost so I stopped payment and sent a Cashier's check by certified mail for the same amount.
Their documentation claims I owe $ 6,310.00.
Their lawsuit claims I owe $ 5,940.00 plus legal fees of 1,795.00.
Their letter claims I owe $ 7,963.00 but they will accept $ 6,300.00.
I sent them $ 5,225.00.
I would appreciate any ideas anybody has!
