Consolidating 2 FirstUSA cards

I've 2 FirstUSA cards with the following debt/credit limit:
A) $1800/$2000
B) $1000/$1200

I'm ready to pay off about $2000 of the debt and merging them into 1 card while maintaining all the credit limit (i.e. combined $3200 limit). What should be the best strategy?

Opt1: transfer balance from card B to card A (FirstUSA CSR says they can "merge" the 2 cards, combine the credit limit and transfer the balance at the same time). Then pay off $2000.

Opt2: Just go ahead and pay off card, then ask them to cancel the card with lower limit while increasing the same amount on the card I want to keep.

Which is a better way? Or there exists other option?

Thanks very much.
