Does SOL Stop Running When You Leave The State?

Back in 1994 I incurred hospital bills that I was unable to pay. One month later I left the state and have not returned there since. The state in question has a Statute of Limitations of six years (meaning that it has now run out).

Last month I applied for a credit card and was turned down. The reasons given were "Collection action" and "Limited credit experience" (now I'm getting a debit card instead). If a judgment had been granted against me, wouldn't the word "judgment" have appeared among the reasons for rejection instead of simply "Collection action?"

And does moving to another state "stop the clock" on the SOL?
