Thanks for responding so fast!

But wouldn't contacting the credit bureau(s) be risky business because one of them might tip off the creditors? And since the judgment (if any) would have been issued by a state court and not a federal court, could they collect the debt across state lines? (I have a former co-worker who was in the same situation; he left Texas for California years ago, and has never heard from the hospital in Texas since he moved).
