Yes, contacting the credit bureaus may lead to further collection activity (just from experience - mine and others).

They can and do collect across state lines. Probably the fact that everything occurred in Texas affected what happened in that situation - Texas does not allow wages to be garnished - collection activities on unsecured debts are useless there.
