A judgment could exist, and not be on your credit reports. You can search here http://www.brbpub.com/pubrecsites.asp

but I am not sure the database is complete when it comes to older records. If you don't find anything, call the clerk of the appropriate court and ask, they will tell you.

If there is an existing judgment, it is a whole new ballgame, but if not, you are home free. You just may have to keep chasing the collectors off once they get your current address. There are sample letters you can use if you don't know what to say.

If there is no judgment, dispute the record on your credit report and see if you can get it off, then get yourself a couple of starter credit cards that you can live with, and let those accounts start aging, so you can begin to rebuild your credit history. Even if it won't come off now, you can begin rebuilding. After the 7 yr reporting period is up it should come off.

Non profit hospitals collect on bills just like for profit hospitals - I don't think that would have any effect on anything.
