Old collection agencies info in my report

I have not used my credit in the last 6-7 years or so. I just received a recent copy and see that a lot of my old account that were charged off are still listed as well as collections. What should I do? Should I try paying these or can I dispute the fact that the shoudl not be in my report. If paying if my best bet, I do not know hoe to contact the collection agencies that have reported me. How should I go about it? Also, legally, how long can this info be in my report and how can I dispute them?
This all happened because I was out of the country for several years... I am back and dont know what to do!
I appreciate any insight or help I can get!
