Late payments on Student Loan

I have a couple of student loans which started coming due at the beginning of 2001. I became late on the accounts, up to 90 days late. Then, I requested a deferment so I don't have to pay them until Jan, 2002. The deferment was retroactive back to Jan, 2001. I called the student loan people and they said that it had been reported and they couldn't delete it since I was late at one time(my credit report says 'current-was late 90 days').

I have disputed these late payments with the credit bureaus. I am wondering what the chances that the creditors will verify that I was at one time late (even though I never paid anything yet and got onto a deferment retroactively).

I have not disputed the late payments with the Federal Government (Federal Direct student loan) yet. I was given a deferment retroactively with them also, but the late payment information is on there.

:)
