SOL and collection agency

Have an account charged off in 1993 and live in a state with 6 year SOL. Coldata called me and they indicated the SOL restarts each time the debt is sold, and they purchased it in 1999. Are they right or are they just forcing me to pay? Is there a place on the web to verify that the SOL is valid only to the original creditor?
