Collection agency representing client?

I have been contacted by a collection agency who claims to be representing the auto manufacturer with an old lease I had. This is an argument from 1996 and I have not heard from anyone in at least 5 years on this. I know the SOL has gone by in this state so I am really not worried but, I am wondering if this CA is really representing the Manufacturer as they claim. I suspect they just bought this account and are trying to see if I will cave in. I won't, I aleady sent them a "Buzz Off" letter. Is there any way to tell if they are indeed representing a client?
