CC Companies "forgetting" about settlements; happen a lot?

I settled with several credit card companies 8 months ago. It took them all a few months to reflect this which was no surpise.

Two of them, however, tried to pretend that the settlement didn't happen. We of course had all the documentary proof and managed to force them to admit it FINALLY. I had to threaten to sue one of 'em (We have a *LOT* of evidence) before they said "Oh, THAT settlement."

I just got the letter the other day saying "Thanks for your settlement". (Of course, there's still a bunch of "late" payments on my credit reports for the months they pretended that the settlments didn't happen.)

So, is this just incredible incompetence, or do they do this to squeeze more money out of you? Bankone was claiming that they had NO record of the settlement...until I provided them with all of it.

Does this happen a lot?

Are they doing this to a lot of people, or was I just lucky?

While they were denying that the settelments ever took place and trying to collect money, were they breaking *some* kind of law?!

I know that big powerful banks get away with a lot, but this seems just ridiculous.
