The SOL is past in CA. The lawsuit will not do them any good. Were you named on the summons, or just your Mother-in-law? If you were name, just show up in court with something showing the date of the last payment, and tell the judge that this is past the statute of limitations, and he will dismiss it. If you don't show up, they can get a judgment "in default" meaning you didn't defend yourself, and they can take the money by attaching accounts, garnishing paycheck, etc.

If you were not named - if it was only your mother-in-law, then she should go to court and do the same thing. If she cannot go to court, someone else can appear on her behalf, and do the same thing.
