cancelling a credit card

how does cancelling a credit card work? is your credit rating affected? and do you continue receiving statements each month? i was sent an amendment to my credit card agreement and was told i could reject the change. I want to reject the change because it is a 9 percent increase in APR. But it also says that if I reject it the account will be closed. How will all of this affect me if i do reject the change?
