Need Advice

I owe $1500. on an American Express Gold Card which was cancelled due to late payments.....they immediately sent the account to a collection/lawyer who has threatened to sue me. They say that American Express will not make a settlement. I offered to pay $50. a month on the account, but they told me that this was not acceptable. They told me that they wanted me to settle the account over a few month period. What are my options? Should I allow them to serve me with papers and negotiate with them......force them to get a judgement?
