The state attorney general in MI is very pro consumer, I would use them for my "clout" for starters, along with the better business bureau.

If they place this account with an outside collection agency, then you will have some other options. It will trash your credit during the process, but that can be fixed pretty easily afterwards.

If they do not respond to your letter satisfactorily, file your complaint with the MI AD, and wait for them to turn this over to collections. When they do that, let me know and I will tell you where to go from there.

Hopefully, your letter and complaints will resolve this, but again, if not, then you want to push them to turn it over to a collection agency because you have more options then.

If this was workers comp, medicaid or medicare, you would have some other assistance available. I am assuming you would have said so up front if that was the case.

One other suggestion, and it is what I would do if I were in your circumstances: a letter and/or phone call from an attorney would probably resolve the issue quickly. If you are busy and have the money, I would recommend this route. There are probably some state or federal laws that apply to your situation, but I don't know them, and wouldn't venture into that area anyway.

At any rate, keep this in mind as a backup plan because this can trash your credit for a long, long time, and you want to take preventive action.
