What do you mean your bank has asked that you pay back the debt? Who contacted you? I doubt that your bank would contact you at this point. Sounds like you have been talking to a collection agency over the phone. What state are you in? Chances are you do not have to pay this at all. Depends on the state.

If someone is calling you, do not talk to them. Make up some excues and get off the phone no matter what they say. Tell them you're sich and your going to throw up or something, and hang up, or ask them to hold on and then put the phone down and don't come back.
