Tell the lawyer the truth. That you didn't know about this, you want to take care of it. Do not tell him anything about a mortgage. There are laws about how much interest he can charge you, but I'm sure you will have to pay it all. The lawyer is supposed to notify the court as soon as you pay it, then the court updates the record. Ask the lawyer how long this will take and then call the court back to make sure the record has been updated. Then you can get your mortgage, if that is the only problem you had.
