I believe, based on the FTC opinion letters, that the charged-off date would constitute the beginning of the seven year reporting time, so based on that, it is not hurting your credit any more to pay on it. Actually, many people have gone back and paid off charged off, past SOL debts to certain companies, in order to obtain an account from them (AmEx and Citibank have "blacklists", and if you don't pay them they won't ever give you another account).
