The lawyers cannot take your wife's money. If you can prove to the court that you were unemployed and the monies were that of your wifes you could probably get the money back. If you have a lawyer you should get their advice. Your wife could probably sue these attorneys or at least file a complaint against them with the CA. Bar Assoc. for unethical conduct. You should probably not have a joint account with your wife to protect her earnings.
