Some other things to note...

If they're using the "you knew there would be a payment due" argument, and you were only 2 days late, you could argue back that you *did* send in the payment even though you didn't get a statement, and that's why it was only 2 days late instead of 20. Also, if your due date varies from month to month (the 10th one month, the 13th the next month, etc.), you could argue that you didn't know the exact due date because that information was on the statement you didn't get.

If you have previously had an excellent payment record, point this out to the rep. Every time I've had a late fee removed I've been told it's because of my good payment history.

FYI, also take care with the term "grace period". This term has a specific meaning in your cardholder agreement. (This term does not mean that the creditor will give you a break on slightly late payments.)
