Got back from lawyers.. not too happy about results. Our lawyer advised us that the best way to get rid of this is to settle it with them for a lesser amount. Frankly, Im not ready to do that. He said that if they bought the account that the collection laws do not apply to them, that the account is theirs. Kast night when my husband spoke to Gulf State, they told him that the offer to settle at 50% is no longer on the table. So now what? We don't have the money to pay them off in one lump, and if we make arrangements we'll wind up paying the full amount that we know for a fact that we don't owe. We are not disputing the fact that we owed the prior company money, we're disputing the amount that Gulf Credit is asking us to pay. Can I ask them to validate the account? Can we ask for copies of all documentation they have on this loan?
Something else my husband is curious about... we got a copy of his credit report and the original creditor of this loan isn't listed anywhere on the report. Gulf State has requested a copy of report twice but is not listed as we owe them. I just don't know what direction to take with this. Any suggestions??? Thanks
Linda
