Why not use it each month and then pay it off when the bill comes? Or put something big on it every 2 or three months, then pay half one month and half the next, so they make a teeny bit of interest.

They can close you account any time if they want to, and many do just what you said - they will close them for inactivity.

But don't close it - you are limiting your own options when you do that. Just use it a little more. You can have insurance premiums billed to it automatically, or use it for a gas card - anything.
